young birmingham artists from the '60s / ikon gallery x medicine bakery launch
Yesterday evening I headed into town with my boyfriend for a wander, and the evening kicked off with an array of drinks, art and cronuts. Yes, it was as lovely as it sounds!
After ten minutes plenty of time spent soaking up the sun, we headed into Medicine Bakery + Gallery for the opening of their latest arts exhibition, Young Birmingham Artists: IKON Artists from the 1960s.
About Medicine Bakery + Gallery and IKON
Medicine Bakery + Gallery is a beautiful little independent coffee shop, with freshly baked artisan treats and a stunning gallery space. I found out about it through my work at Project Birmingham’s 2018 Launch Weekend. The bakery and gallery resides within the building which was originally home to the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists; Medicine Bakery + Gallery embraces the space’s history to promote the work of local artists and discussions around their work.
IKON Gallery is a gorgeous contemporary art gallery in the beautiful Brindley Place. Prior to its opening in 1965, the group of artists who founded it used to exhibit their work at the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists’ space in New Street, which is now home to Medicine Bakery + Gallery!
About the Exhibition
Young Birmingham Artists: IKON Artists from the 1960s sees the work of these artists return to the walls of the city as we get an insight into the beginnings of IKON and the unbelievable talent of those behind it.
Artists featured include Peter Berry, Jesse Bruton, Trevor Denning, Robert Groves, Sylvani Merilion, David Prentice, Dinah Prentice, John Salt and Pamela Scott Wilkie.
We were welcomed to a drinks reception which filled the gallery with a range of local creatives, whether working in the industry or supporting it. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming; the art was simply stunning; the drinks were delicious and the food was as mouthwatering as ever ( we made sure to pick up some baked treats before the event began ) !
Thank you so much to Medicine Bakery + Gallery and IKON for inviting us to such a special event – I’m so grateful to have been given the opportunity to meet such inspirational creatives.
